Mattherhorn Cervino Speed Opening: Saturday 22 October final snow check

The FIS will carry out a final snow check on Saturday 22 October, in view of the Audi FIS World Cup Matterhorn Cervino Speed Opening. The men's races of the fast disciplines are scheduled for 29 and 30 October on the «Gran Becca». Following a provisional snow check that took place today, Sunday 16 October, and favorable weather forecasts, it was decided to carry out a definitive snow check on Saturday.

On Saturday 16 October 2022, the FIS, represented by the race manager Hannes Trinkl and the assistant Raimund Plancker, together with the race director Rainer Senoner and the president of the organizing committee Franz Julen, visited the "Gran Becca" track, in the international area of Cervinia-Zermatt, for a first snow check. Work on the spectacular descent path in the shadow of the Matterhorn was completed up to 300 meters from the finish. Snow is missing only in the last stretch of the track. Two / three cold nights will still be needed for the “Gran Becca” to be ready from the start to the finish

«The Matterhorn Cervino Speed Opening will take place for the first time and is a unique project. In addition, large investments have been made in connection with this premiere. We do not want to leave any stone unturned to be able to kick off the Matterhorn Speed Opening as scheduled, on 29 and 30 October, with the men's races. We believe that these six extra days can make a difference for the organizers, so that the races can run successfully, ”says FIS General Secretary Michel Vion.

Furthermore, the preparations made on and off the track were decisive for the extension by the FIS, as well as the favorable weather forecast for the end of next week, with temperatures well below zero.

«We are very grateful to the FIS for this chance. Like us, the International Ski and Snowboard Federation also believes that the first edition of the Matterhorn Cervino Speed Opening can take place successfully. Our team will continue to work with constancy and great commitment so that the first cross-border descent of the World Cup can take place ”, concludes the president of the organizing committee Franz Julen.
